Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds since January 1, 1970 UTC. It is the standard way computers store and exchange time values without timezone ambiguity.
Can I convert a timestamp in both directions?
Yes. Enter a Unix timestamp to get a human-readable date, or enter a date and time to get the equivalent Unix timestamp.
Why do I sometimes see 13-digit timestamps?
A 13-digit timestamp is in milliseconds rather than seconds. JavaScript and many modern APIs use milliseconds. Divide by 1000 to convert to seconds if a system expects the shorter 10-digit format.
Does the converter use my local timezone?
You can choose between UTC and local time display. Unix timestamps are always stored in UTC — the timezone only affects how the human-readable output is shown.
